Samurai International RFC have become one of, if not the most well-known and respected invitation teams on the worldwide
circuit. The Samurai team was formed in 1996 by Terry Sands Samurais' Product/Brand Director and former England Sevens
manager.
The team's very first tournament was the 1996 Amsterdam Sevens, where Sands was asked to put a team together to
commemorate the 25th anniversary of the event. The all-new team brought with them a revolutionary approach to invitation 7's,
where they turned up with a full management and support team. The team romped to victory by winning the event in style and
have never looked back. The Samurai's have maintained their professional approach and inspirational image to this day.
The Samurai's have a truly fantastic record where over the years they have recorded victories at almost every well-known major
7's tournament. Notorious for their striking kit and professional team ethic they continue to attract players that are able to
surprise the Worlds best. Players such as Ben Gollings, Pat Sanderson, David Strettle and Simon Amor from England. Martyn
Williams, Chris Wyatt, Arwel Thomas and Gavin Henson from Wales. Owen Scrimgeour, Junior Tonu'u and Stu Forster from New
Zealand. Cameron Pitther, Mattie Isaac and Tim Walsh from Australia. Steffan Basson, Stephen Brink and Phillip Berger from
South Africa. Sailosi Naiteque, Naisoni Rokobiau and Sireli Bobo from Fiji - have ALL gained their Samurai Caps over recent years
and have all helped to make Samurai International RFC the team it is today.
Players and management alike are honoured to be selected to participate and to be associated with the Samurai International
Team. Paul Treu (SA 7's) and Dai Rees (Wales 7's) are also working with the Samurai 7's Team to help develop their young players.
"During my tenure as England 7's coach we were very pleased with our association with Samurai 7's. They were the preferred
feeder team for England's exciting young players. The Samurai 7's is a professional set up with a rugby emphasis of player
development coupled with enjoying the 7's experience in a winning environment. The Samurai have helped develop a large
number of players who have progressed to represent England 7's and then in turn the Senior National side. David Strettle and
James Haskell are 2 such examples.
Mike Friday
Former England Sevens Head Coach & current Samurai International RFC Chairman
"For me, coaching the Samurai team is an honour and a privilege. We have often achieved the impossible when considering an
invitation team brings together an unfamiliar mix of youth, flair and experience having to achieve and perform with minimal
preparation. "
Colin Hillman
Former Wales Sevens Coach & Samurai International RFC Coach
"Samurai are a great vehicle to have for England Sevens to utilise for player identification and progression. I can always
guarantee a well organised team off the field and this makes my life so much easier when discussing release for Players, especially
from the Premiership as they know each individual athlete will be treated brilliantly and their welfare put as number one priority.
The team has gained a fantastic reputation within rugby and this attracts some great players to wear the famous shirt. Everytime
I have coached a Samurai side, it has always been hugely beneficial personally and for England Sevens and it serves as another
great route to help identify and nurture the nations best talent in the game."
Ben Ryan
Current England Sevens Head Coach
